History

Shipley Associates has a 42-year track record of success in each phase of the business acquisition process, from strategy development to proposal preparation and contract execution. Our strength is in understanding the drivers of business buying behavior and uncovering the hidden needs that can be leveraged to give our clients an advantage over their competitors. Shipley’s thought leadership emphasizes the use of clear communication strategies to influence our clients’ customer buying decision.

Shipley was established in 1972 in Bountiful, Utah as a communications consulting and training firm – focused on helping companies communicate more effectively. As our business and reputation grew, we expanded into many strategic markets, including oil and gas, healthcare, aerospace and defense,telecommunications and information technology.

Shipley Associates was acquired by Franklin Covey in 1993 and was integrated into the company’s performance consulting division. In 1997, Steve Shipley and five working partners re-acquired from Franklin Covey all intellectual property, methods, and content for Shipley’s business development services group – now known as Shipley Associates. Our sole focus is on helping clients win business! Today, Shipley maintains offices across the world to help companies compete and win.

Since 2007 Shipley has been operating in the German market for proposal consulting and training. Effective customer relationships have seen the business develop and we have successfully supported leading international businesses engaged, among others, in the Defence, Telecommunications and IT, Logistics and Travel industries. In 2014 Shipley GmbH was founded to address the growing importance of this market for Shipley Associates. Customers in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland can now be supported by a local team, Services are available in German Language.

Professional Associations

In 1988, Shipley recognized the need for a professional association that focused on proposal management. The company invested time, resources, and talent to establish a non-profit association, the Association of Proposal Management Professionals (APMP). Several thousand members and dozens of regional chapters around the globe now support the proposal profession through conferences, certification programs, a body of knowledge, and a business development community of practice. Shipley remains a Platinum Sponsor of APMP and is one of only a few Approved Training Organizations (ATOs) offering continuing education credits to certified members.

Shipley also maintains full rights and ownership of the intellectual property associated with the Business Development Capability Maturity Model® (BD-CMM®) that provides industry research and benchmark data available from the Center for Business Development Excellence. (CMM® is a registered trademark of Carnegie Mellon University)
